Change in Schedule Will See U.S. Play in Canada for First Time Since 2001
Both the USA’s Abby Wambach and Canada’s Christine Sinclair Shoot for 100th International GoalCHICAGO (May 12, 2009) – The U.S. Women’s National Team has added a May 25 friendly against Canada in Toronto to replace two previously canceled matches against Japan. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. ET at BMO Field, Canada’s national stadium and home to Toronto FC of Major League Soccer.
The game will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel, and fans can follow the match online via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.
Canada was previously to play host to Japan on May 25, but after the Japanese pulled out of their North American tour, the U.S. will now travel to Canada for the first time since 2001 when the two teams also met in Toronto. That match was played at the old Varsity Stadium and ended in a 2-2 draw in front of 9,023 fans, which at the time was the largest crowd ever to watch the Canadian women’s team in Canada.
“I am grateful that we could put together a game on such short notice and want to thank the WPS teams and officials for their flexibility in unique situation,” said U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage. “We’ve been watching a lot of WPS games and it will be so nice to have all the players together who have performed well in the league. I am very happy that the USA and Canada could get together to organize this match.”
The quick arrangement of the match in Toronto means that the USA and Canada will play three times this summer as the two countries were already scheduled to meet twice in July in the United States, on July 19 in Rochester, N.Y., and on July 22 in Charleston, S.C. Tickets are available for both games through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the Rochester and Charleston areas. Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290.
The USA and Canada played five times in 2008, with the USA post a 4-0-1 record that included topping Canada in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Final in penalty kicks. One of the victories came in overtime in a Beijing Olympic quarterfinal, and the U.S. also edged Canada 1-0 in the Peace Queen Cup Final in South Korea.
The match presents an interesting and historic scenario for both teams’ star strikers as the USA’s Abby Wambach and Canada’s Christine Sinclair will each be going for their 100th career international goals in the same match, the first time that has ever happened in soccer history.
The match also marks the return to international play for Wambach for the first time since she suffered a broken leg in the USA’s final pre-Olympic match last July.
While the USA and Canada have played 44 times in their histories, the most meetings with the USA by any country other than Norway (45 games), the USA’s trip to Canada is certainly rare. Of the 44 matches, just four have been played in Canada, 25 have been in the United States and 15 at neutral sites. The USA is 3-0-1 against the Maple Leafs in matches played in Canada.

Westwood, Mass. (May 6, 2009) – Four Boston Breakers are among the 21 players called up to the U.S. Women’s National Team by head coach Pia Sundhage, it was announced this afternoon by U.S. Soccer. The team will face Japan in a pair of matches, May 20 in Frisco, Texas and again on May 23 in Sandy, Utah.
The four Breakers, a total which matches the Chicago Red Stars for the WPS team with the most call-ups, are forward Amy Rodriguez, midfielder Angela Hucles and defenders Amy LePeilbet and Heather Mitts. None of the four will miss any matches with Boston, and will join the national team following the Breakers home match against the Washington Freedom on May 17.
Rodriguez, Hucles and Mitts have all been mainstays with the national team in recent times and were each a part of the gold medal-winning squad which defeated Brazil last summer in the final of the Beijing Olympics. For LePeilbet, this is her first time back with the team since 2006.
Since the Olympic triumph, both Hucles and Mitts have hit the 100 cap (appearance) milestone, becoming the 24th and 25th Americans, respectively, to do so. Hucles earned her 100th cap against the Korea Republic on Nov. 8, while Mitts reached the century mark in the previous U.S. match against Sweden in the final of the Algarve Cup on March 11.
Rodriguez, who had the assist on the game-winning goal in the USA’s 1-0 win over Brazil in the Olympic final, has scored six times in 35 international matches. LePeilbet has earned 23 caps with the national team from 2004-06.
These will be the first-ever international games for the U.S. during the WPS season and the first domestic matches of 2009 for a U.S. team which is in very early preparations for qualifying for the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany. Seventeen of the 21 players on the roster are currently playing in WPS, and Sundhage also named four collegiate players.

Portrait of Passion takes you on a journey through the years of the US Women’s National Team members. The books takes you from the players “First Kick” all the way through the Women’s World Cup in China 2007. The author Gail Stewart interviewed the players and through those interviews you get a good look at the players lives. Through Paul Phillips photographs you get a wonderful sense of the friendship and teamwork the team has.
I would recommend this book for all ages. Portrait of Passion shows what great role-models we have today and this book just reminds you of that fact and reenforces it. Make sure you go to PortraitOfPassion.com to order your copy of the book today.
