Westwood, Mass. (March 4, 2009) – The Boston Breakers announced a series of three doubleheaders with the MPS Boston Renegades of the W-League for the 2009 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) season. The doubleheaders come as continuation of an existing partnership with Mass Premier Soccer (MPS). The Breakers and MPS formally announced their partnership in Dec., 2007.
In addition to the three doubleheaders, the Boston Breakers will continue to encourage the vertical integration of any players that excel while competing in the highly-competitive USL W-League with the MPS Boston Renegades.
“We are happy to be continuing our developmental partnership with Mass Premier Soccer and to be offering an opportunity for our fans to see more quality soccer,” said Breakers General Manager Joe Cummings. “Our coaching staff has been working closely with Renegades head coach Darren Gallagher for some time now to further enhance the player pool at our disposal.”
The Renegades will take the field prior to the Breakers’ home games at Harvard Stadium on June 14, June 17 and July 15.
“Having former Renegades players such as Angela Hucles, Alison Martino, Caitlin Fisher, Maggie Tomecka and Ashley Phillips with the Breakers for the pre-season shows the caliber of player that has come through our system in recent years,” said Gallagher. “I am very excited about seeing more of our players making the step up to WPS next year and in years to come.”
The MPS Boston Renegades were National Champions in 2001 and 2002 and are widely regarded as one of the best amateur women’s clubs in the country. They will play their home opener this year at Milton High School and their remaining home games at Wayland High School. The proceeds from the home opener at Milton will be donated to Milton HS coach, Mike Madden, who has tragically lost the use of his legs.
The MPS Boston Renegades play in the Northeast Division of the W-League. For more information on the home schedule and ticket packages, visit http://www.masspremiersoccer.com.
