Whitehill, Scurry, Long sign with Freedom

BOYDS, Md. (March 9) – The Washington Freedom announced today that U.S Women’s National Team veterans Cat Whitehill and Briana Scurry and 2009 WPS Draft first round pick Allie Long have signed with the club.
Whitehill, a defender from the storied University of North Carolina program, has 129 caps and 11 goals in her USWNT career, which includes winning a gold medal with the team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece and is the only defender in World Cup history to score two in a single game.
Scurry, a goalkeeper selected in the fifth round of the 2009 WPS Draft, is one of the most recognizable names in USWNT history after helping the team win the 1999 Women’s World Cup and gold medals in the 1996 (Atlanta) and 2004 Olympics. Scurry was also one of the founding members of the WUSA, playing for the Atlanta Beat from 2001-2003 and helping the team to the league’s championship game in 2001 and 2003.
Long, a midfielder, finished her collegiate career at the University of North Carolina in the fall by helping the Tar Heels secure the 2008 NCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship. Long also has international experience having played for the U.S. U-20 and U-21 national teams.
