Chicago Red Stars To Play Notre Dame, Illinois in Preseason

Posted by iamhannah on March 19, 2009

BRIDGEVIEW, IL (March 18, 2009) – The Chicago Red Stars announced the details of two exhibition games against the University of Notre Dame and the University of Illinois March 28th and March 31st, respectively.  These scrimmages, designed as final tune-ups prior to start of the inaugural Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) season, will provide the Red Stars a valuable opportunity to assess their readiness and gain cohesion against high quality opponents in advance of their season opener April 4th in Edwardsville, IL against Saint Louis Athletica.

On Saturday, March 28th, the Red Stars will face perennial NCAA power the University of Notre Dame.  The match will be played at Wedgbury Stadium at Sportscore Two, located at 8800 E. Riverside Blvd in Loves Park, IL, just outside of Rockford, IL.  Kickoff for the game will be 7 p.m.

Three days later, on Tuesday, March 31st, Chicago’s WPS side heads downstate to take on the University of Illinois in Champaign.  The 6 p.m. match at Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium will serve as a homecoming for Red Stars forward Ella Masar.  The Urbana native starred for the Fighting Illini before joining the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team and becoming a second round draft pick in the 2009 WPS Draft.

“We are excited to have these valuable opportunities to prepare for the season against a pair of outstanding opponents,” Red Stars Coach Emma Hayes said.  “The fact that we can take our team on the road and show fans around the state of Illinois what Red Stars soccer is all about makes the opportunity even better.”

As with the Red Stars’ previous local exhibition, in lieu of an admission fee, there is a suggested donation of $5.   All proceeds from the matches benefit the Chicago Red Stars Charitable Foundation, which works to provide opportunities that will benefit girls and women, provides grants to organizations who work with underprivileged youth and works to improve the health and education of girls and women in the Chicagoland area.

“The Chicago Red Stars are committed to giving back to the community,” said Executive Director of the Chicago Red Stars Charitable Foundation Amber Simons.  “We are very fortunate to be the recipient of the community’s support and we feel very privileged to be in a position to effect positive change in the lives of girls and women in the area.  We are looking forward to two exciting days of soccer.”
