Skort Update

Posted by leyrocks on February 25, 2009

So here is an update on the whole skort situation:

One of the more unique elements of the WPS collection put on display are “ wraps” that were made as an additional piece for the Los Angeles Sol, Boston Breakers, FC Gold Pride and Sky Blue FC.  It’s a complement to the shorts and definitely something different.

They are completely optional and will not be worn in games. The wraps are removable and can be detached from the shorts with easy to remove buttons.

Thank goodness!

To reconfirm that the skort or wrap will just be a fashion accessory, Kristin Lilly  had this to say when visiting the Today Show:

Lilly: Come on do you really thing we are going to play in skort? It’s an accessory and makes it fun (wear it to and from the stadium).

Asante Reaches Agreement with Sky Blue FC

Posted by iamhannah on February 24, 2009

SOMERSET, NJ (Feb. 23, 2009) – Sky Blue FC announced today that the NJ/NY franchise of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) has secured the services of another international player by reaching an agreement with Anita Asante. The England National Team defender will join Sky Blue FC for the inaugural season of WPS.

Sky Blue FC opens its season on April 5th at 4 p.m. when it hosts three-time FIFA Player of the Year Marta and the Los Angeles Sol at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ. (888-SBFC-TIX – www.SkyBlueStore.com) Sky Blue FC previously announced agreements with Australians Sarah Walsh and Collette McCallum and Brazilian Rosana.

Asante joins Sky Blue FC from Chelsea Ladies FC in the England Women’s Premier League. Sky Blue FC obtained her rights by selecting her as a post-draft discovery player on October 3, 2008. She will join her new team in mid-March following England’s participation in the Cypress Cup, which runs from March 5-12.

“Having Anita on board is a huge coup,” said Sky Blue FC General Manager & Head Coach Ian Sawyers. “Her level of play makes her one of the up-and-coming players in Europe, and definitely one of the premier players in England. She is a young player with what I believe is the potential to eventually become the captain of the England National Team.”

Asante made her debut with England in May 2004 and has 34 caps with one goal. The 23-year old previously played for England on the U-17 and U-19 levels and she competed in the inaugural FIFA U-19 World Championship in Canada in 2002.

Prior to joining Chelsea in 2008, Asante played with the Arsenal Ladies. She joined Arsenal as a youth player in 1998 and was part of the team that captured the “quadruple” in 2006/2007 – the UEFA Women’s Cup, FA Women’s National Premier League, FA Women’s Cup and the FA Women’s Premier League Cup.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (February 13, 2009)- FC Gold Pride, Bay Area Franchise of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS)announced today, the signing of Japanese footballer Eriko Arakawa, Brazilian midfielder Adriane and Bay Area native Tracy Hamm.Arakawa, an established star on the Japanese national team, has been playing for her country’s senior women’s national team since 2000, making her debut in the Pan Pacific Games on June 10 against Canada. Since then, she has appeared in two World Cups (2003, 2007) and two Olympic Games for Japan and has helped lead the rise of Japan’s women’s soccer in recent years, leading her country to a semi-final appearance in the 2008 Beijing Games. The star forward also plays for NTV Belza of the L-League in Japan. Arakawa was selected by FC Gold Pride as the first pick in the third round of the WPS International Draft.
“We have added one of the most creative attacking forwards in the world in Eriko,” said FC Gold Pride Head Coach Albertin Montoya. “She has proven herself time and time again in on the international stage and in Japan’s highly competitive L- League. What makes her dangerous is her pace, she can beat just about anyone on the dribble, she possesses superior technical skills and she’s a lethal finisher.”

“I think our forwards will complement each other very well. We have a combination of strength, power, speed and creativity that is not seen very often in the game,” added Montoya.

Brazilian, Adriane joins her fellow national teammate Formiga, officially signing with FC Gold Pride. Adriane, the youngest player on the Pride Roster at 21 years of age, has twice represented her country in the U20 Women’s World Cup, most recently helping her team to the quarter-finals in Chile. WPS-playing rights for the young midfielder were obtained by FC Gold Pride who named her as a post-draft discovery player.

Bay Area native Tracy Hamm was selected by FC Gold Pride in the sixth pick in the fourth round (27thoverall) in the WPS General Draft. The Moraga resident attended Cal (2003-2006) where she was a four-year letter winner, as part of the back line for the Golden Bears. Hamm earned the honor of Cal’s Freshman of the Year in 2003 as the team’s leading goal scorer. Most recently, Hamm played for the California Storm of the WPSL in 2008.

Arakawa, Adriane and Hamm will all be present when training camp opens on March 1.
